The Half-Built Player Ledger: Why Bangladesh Cricket Never Keeps Its Own Scaling Kit

That Potchefstroom afternoon is still sitting in a folder on my old laptop. February 9, 2026, Senwes Park. Chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised target after rain, Bangladesh's Under-19 side beat India by three wickets, and fifteen adolescent faces dissolved into flashbulbs.

What the scoreboard did not record is the five years that followed. From that squad, Towhid Hridoy, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Shoriful Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shahadat Hossain Dipu have worn the senior national shirt. The boy who lifted the trophy highest, Akbar Ali, has to my knowledge never played a senior international for Bangladesh.

I reopen that folder every few months for one reason. Talent does not always disappear; often only the final step disappears. And the final step is never given away. It is bought, or in some cases sold off.

The current cycle is one long draft phase for Bangladesh cricket. The IPL auction lands in December, the BPL in January and February, the National Cricket League squeezed in between, then the ILT20 and the SA20, with letters about No Objection Certificates travelling back and forth between board and player. With the 2026 T20 World Cup coming into view, team management is running the arithmetic: how much power hitting, how much death bowling.

What football calls a transfer window, cricket calls squad planning. And every transfer rumour is really a patch note, written for a roster nobody has finished reading.

An academy product in the IPL gets thirty-plus, plus at least two overseas tours.

The gap is not ten percent; it is a multiple. Nobody learns to handle 145 kilometres per hour by batting all year on 130-kilometre domestic pitches. This is where the A-team tours matter. Hridoy, Joy, Shoriful all climbed that staircase. In fifteen years, the A-team programme is the best structural decision the BCB has made.

The last twenty percent of the development bill is paid in Bangladesh. The interest is collected abroad.

Consider a bowler's journey. At home he learns the run-up, the seam position, the discipline of line and length. That is our part. The remaining twenty percent is the ability to decide, in front of forty thousand people, against the world's best finishers, inside the last four overs. That classroom does not exist here. It exists in the ILT20, the SA20, the Hundred, the IPL. While he sits in that classroom, the player moves to another coach's plan, another physio's workload management, another franchise's incentives.

Football writes its loan-with-obligation clause so that the borrowing club is eventually forced to buy. In cricket's franchise loan, the obligation evaporates the day after the auction. The player returns tired, sometimes injured, and the rehabilitation invoice lands on the board's desk. I am not calling this unjust. It is simply an unequal contract, and in an unequal contract the investor does not even collect the stated upside.

Small cricket economies no longer export cricketers. They export unfinished cricketers and import losses.

Move onto the field and the picture sharpens. I read the powerplay as a draft phase: fielding restrictions are the map, the batting order is the composition. Who opens, who bats three, is exactly a top-lane champion pick, because the next thirty overs of macro hang off it.

Bowling him in the fourth over is a completely different asset from bowling him in the forty-fourth. That is not a talent question, it is a rotation question. Our bowling plans still hoard hero picks and lack the patience for rotation.

Then there is a patch note. His workload, whether the new ball is used in the powerplay or at the death, and his price at the December auction read together will tell us whether Bangladesh stays a seller or becomes an owner.
